TRAGU´RIUM

TRAGU´RIUM (Τραγούριον, Strab., Ptol.; Τραγύριον, Polyb.), an important town of Dalmatia, situated upon an island, which was separated from the mainland by an artificial canal. According to the Antonine Itinerary, it was distant 6 miles from Praetorium and 13 from Salonae. Pliny calls it “Tragurium civium Romanorum,” and says that it was celebrated for its marble. Its name is preserved in the modern Trau. (Plb. 32.18; Strab. ii. p.124, vii. p. 315; Ptol. 2.17.14; Plin. Nat. 3.22. s 26; Mela, 2.3; It. Ant. p. 272; Tab. Peut.; Geogr. Rav. 4.16.)
