ἀγών (ἄγω): (1) assembly, esp. to witness games, ἵζανεν (Ἀχιλλεύς), Il. 23.258, λῦτο, Il. 24.1, then contest, games, Od. 8.259.—(2) assemblage or place of assemblage, of the ships, νεῶν ἐν ἀγῶνι (the Greek camp), Il. 16.500 ; θεῖος, ‘of the gods,’ Il. 18.376, but Il. 7.298 of the ‘temple-hall,’ containing the statues of the gods.—(3) place or scene of combat, arena, including the space occupied by the spectators, Il. 23.531.
