αἰδέομαι, αἴδομαι (αἰδώς), pr. imp. αἰδεῖο, ipf. αἴδετο, fut. αἰδέςςομαι, aor. mid. ᾐδεσάμην and αἰδεσσάμην, pass. ᾐδέσθην, αἰδέσθην, 3 pl. αἴδεσθεν: feel shame, regard, or mercy (from moral or humane scruples, toward oneself or others, even toward inferiors); τινὰ, respect, have regard for, stand abashed before, Il. 1.23, Od. 3.96; w. inf., scruple, be ashamed, from modesty, or from motives of propriety, good-taste, etc., Od. 14.146, Od. 18.184 ; αἰδομένων, ‘selfrespecting’ (opp. φευγόντων), Il. 5.531.
