contrast or transition like δέ, and
weightier than δέ only in being
disyllabic and not post-positive (cf. ἤτοι); answering to ἤτοι or
μέν in a previous clause, Od. 24.155, Il.
1.68, etc.; often at the beginning of a sentence without
distinct correlation, esp. αὖταρ ἐπεί,
Il. 3.1.
