αὐλός : flute, a wind-instrument more like the clarinet than the modern transverse flute, Il. 18.495, Il. 10.13; then any tube, channel, as the ‘socket’ in which the point of a lance was fitted, Il. 17.297; ‘holes’ or ‘eyes,’ receiving the tongue of a buckle, Od. 19.227; of a ‘jet’ of blood, Od. 22.18.
