ξίφος , εος: sword. The ξίφος had a two-edged blade, joined to the hilt (κώπη) by bands of dark metal (μελάνδετον). It was worn in a sheath (κουλεόν), suspended by a baldric (τελαμών) that passed over the shoulder. (See cut on preceding page.)
