δεινός (root δϝι): dreadful, terrible; often adv., δεινὸν ἀῦσαι, δεινὰ ἰδών, etc.; in good sense, δεινός τ᾽ αἰδοἶός τε, i. e. commanding reverence, Od. 8.22; cf. Il. 3.172, where the scansion is to be noted, ἕκυρε δϝεινός τε.
