thunder at the gates of a besieged town, ἀμφὶ πύλα_ς ὅμαδος καὶ δοῦπος ὀρώρει
| πύργων βαλλομένων, Il. 9.573; of the din of
battle, compared to the echo of woodmen's axes, Il. 16.635; the roar of
the sea, Od. 5.401; or of a mountain
