5.343, etc.; of Circe, threatened with Odysseus's sword,
Od. 10.323; of a child, Il. 6.468; transferred to inanimate
objects, the ‘twanging’ of the bow-string, Il. 4.125; the ‘blare’
of the trumpet, Il. 18.219;
‘hissing’ of hot iron in water, Od. 9.392; ‘crackling’
of fire, Il. 23.216; but the Eng.
words do not involve a personification like the Greek.
