κλῆρος : (1) lot, a stone or potsherd, on which each man scratched his mark, Il. 7.175. The lots were then shaken in a helmet, and he whose lot first sprang forth was thereby selected for the matter in hand.—(2) paternal estate, Od. 14.64.
