πούς , ποδός, pl. dat. ποσσί, πόδεσσι, du. ποδοῖιν: foot; said also of the ‘talons’ of birds, Od. 15.526; designating swiftness of foot, in the race, Il. 13.325; fig., of the base of a mountain, Il. 20.59; technically, νηός, sheet, a rope fastened to the lower corners of a sail to control it (see plate IV.), Od. 5.260, Od. 10.32.
