ὑπέρ, ὑπείρ (cf. super): over, prep. w. gen. and acc., accented ὕπερ when it follows its case.—(1) w. gen., local, over, above, beyond, across; ὑπὲρ οὐδοῦ βῆναι, Od. 17.575; ὑπὲρ κεφαλῆς στῆναί τινι, Il. 2.20; τηλοῦ ὑπὲρ πόντου, Od. 13.257. Metaph., for, in defence of, Il. 1.444, Il. 7.449; w. verbs of entreaty, by, for the sake of (per), γουνάζεσθαι ὑπὲρ τοκέων, ὑπὲρ ψυ_χῆς καὶ γούνων, Ο 660, Od. 15.261; then like περί, concerning (de), Il. 6.524.—(2) w. acc., local, over, beyond, ἀλαλῆσθαι ὑπεὶρ ἅλα, Od. 3.74; ‘along the surface’ of the hand, Il. 5.339. Metaph., beyond, transcending, against, ὑπὲρ αἶσαν, μοῖραν, θεόν, Ρ 327, Od. 1.34.
