τῶν συγγραμμάτων, ‘in prose,’ more fully τῶν καταλογάδην συγγραμμάτων (§ 7). ἀλλὰ πεπόνθασιν ὅπερ κτἑ, ‘for they have the same feeling towards them as towards those who offer advice.’ πλησιάζειν δὲ βούλονται . . . ἀποτρέπουσιν, ‘but they like to associate with those who have the same faults as themselves rather than with those who seek to turn them from their faults’; cp. ad Dem. 45 τῶν μὲν γὰρ ἄλλων τοὺς πλείστους εὑρήσομεν, ὥσπερ τῶν σιτίων τοῖς ἡδίστοις μᾶλλον ἢ τοῖς ὑγιεινοτάτοις χαίροντας, οὕτω καὶ τῶν φίλων τοῖς συνεξαμαρτάνουσι πλησιάζοντας ἀλλ᾽ οὐ τοῖς νουθετοῦσιν.
