πρὸς τὸ ἐπιχειρεῖν κτλ. “Quod attinet ad amasii capiendi conatum” (Stallb.).

ἐξουσίαν...ἐπαινεῖσθαι. Here, as often, the main idea is put in the participle. Again Jowett misleads, in rendering νόμος “the custom of mankind.”

θαυμαστὰ ἔργα . “θαυμαστὰ vel θαυμάσια ποιεῖν vel ἐργάζεσθαι est sich wunderlich geberden...quod dicitur de iis qui vel propter dolorem et indignationem vel ob ingentem laetitiam vel etiam prae vehementi aliqua cupiditate insolito more se gerunt” (Stallb.). Cp. 213 D, Apol. 35 A, Theaet. 151 A.
