Clau'dius

11. APP. CLAUDIUS APP., C. F. N. CAUDEX, also son of No. 9. He derived his surname from his attention to naval affairs. (Senec. de Brev. Vitae, 13.) He was elected consul B. C. 264, and commanded the forces sent to the assistance of the Mamertini. He effected a landing on the coast of Sicily by night, defeated Hiero and the Carthaginians, and raised the siege of Messana. After a repulse from Egesta, and some other unsuccessful operations, he left a garrison in Messana and returned home. (Plb. 1.11, 12, 16; Suet. Tib. 2.)
