LIMNAEA, LIMNE'TES, LIMNE'GENES

（Λιμναία ῾ος᾿, Λιμνήτης ῾ις᾿, Λιμνηγενής), i. e. inhabiting or born in a lake or marsh, is a surname of several divinities who were believed either to have sprung from a lake, or had their temples near a lake. Instances are, Dionysus at Athens (Eustath. ad Hom. p. 871; Callim. Fragm. 280, Bentl.; Thuc. 2.15; Aristoph. Frogs 216; Athen. 10.437, xi. p. 465), and Artemis at Sicyon, near Epidaurus (Paus. 2.7.6, 3.23.10), on the frontiers between Laconia and Messenia (Paus. 3.2.6, 7.4, 4.4.2, 31.3, 7.20.7, &c.; Strab. viii. p.361; Tac. Ann. 4.43), near Calamae (Paus. 4.31.3), at Tegea (8.53.11, comp. 3.14.2), Patrae (7.20.7); it is also used as a surname of nymphs (Theocrit. 5.17) that dwell in lakes or marshes.
