Note.-The
Atlanta-
Dalton campaign began on May 7th, and ended on the 1st of September, 1864, and the above reports are exact copies of those made to the
commanding general during its progress, and in the order in which they here appear.
General Johnston commanded from the commencement of the campaign until the 18th of July, when he was relieved from duty, and
General Hood assigned to the command of the army.
Hence the casualties of battle which occurred in the army between the 4th and the 18th of July belong to the period of
General Johnston's command, and are as
