Doc. 135.-Virginia ordinance, prohibiting citizens of Virginia from holding office under the United States, passed July, 1861.
1. Be it ordained
, That any citizen of Virginia
holding office under the Government
of the United States
after the 31st of July, 1861, shall be forever banished from this State, and is declared an alien enemy, and shall be so considered in all the courts of Virginia
2. Any citizen of Virginia
who may hereafter undertake to represent the State of Virginia
in the Congress of the United States, in addition to the penalties of the preceding section, be deemed guilty of treason, and his property shall, upon information by the Attorney-General
, in any court of this Commonwealth, be confiscated to the use of the State
3. The first section shall not be deemed applicable to any officer of the United States
now out of the limits of the United
States, or of the Confederate States
, until after the 1st day of July, 1862.
