| Colonel John S. Mosby and some of his men Speaking likenesses of Colonel John S. Mosby, the famous Confederate independent leader and his followers — chiefly sons of gentlemen attracted to his standard by the daring nature of his operations. His almost uniform success, with the spirit of romance which surrounded his exploits, drew thousands of recruits to his leadership. Usually his detachments were small--twenty to eighty men.
