The construction corps of the
United States Military Railroads was as versatile in its attainments as the
British marines according to
Kipling-“Soldier and Sailor, too.”
This busy scene shows construction men at work on the wharves which formed the
City Point terminal to
Grant's military railroad, connecting it with the army in front of
Petersburg.
This hastily constructed road was about thirteen miles long, measured in a straight line and not counting the undulations, which, if added together, would have made it several miles in height.
