Major-generals Thomas Logan Howard army of the Cumberland and army of the Tennessee

George Henry Thomas, commander of the Army of the Cumberland in the Tennessee and Georgia campaigns, including Stone's River, Chickamauga, Chattanooga and Atlanta.

John Alexander Logan, commander of the Army of the Tennessee in front of Atlanta. He subsequently resumed command of a Corps and led it through the Carolinas.

Oliver Otis Howard, commander of the Army of the Tennessee in part of the Atlanta campaign and in the March through Georgia and the Carolinas.
