Birge, Henry Warner, 1825-1888

Military officer; born in Hartford, Conn., Aug. 25. 1825; was one of Governor Buckingham's aides when the Civil War began. He entered the service in June, 1861, as major, and early in 1862 was made colonel. For services on the lower Mississippi he was made brigadier-general, Sept. 19, 1863. He was in the Red River campaign and in Sheridan's campaign in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864. In June. 1865, he was appointed to command the military district of Savannah. For his services in the army he was brevetted major-general of volunteers, and voted the thanks of the Connecticut legislature. He died in New York City. June 1, 1888.
