Military officer; born in Cadiz, O., Nov. 15, 1832; graduated at the United States Military Academy in 1853; assistant Professor of Chemistry there in 1859-61; served through the Civil War as captain and major; promoted colonel and received the brevet of brigadier-general; retired in 1896.
He is the author of The military power of the United States during the War of the rebellion.
