Ammidown, Edward Holmes, 1820-

Merchant; born in Southbridge, Mass., Oct. 28, 1820; was graduated at Harvard College in 1853. After travelling for several years in the United States and Europe he engaged in mercantile business in New York City in 1860; later became a director in several banks, insurance companies, etc. In 1881 he was elected president of the American Protective Tariff League: and in 1882 chairman of the Metropolitan Industrial League. In 1890 President Harrison appointed him a commissioner for the World's Columbian Exposition, but he declined the post. He is the author of numerous political articles, including National illiteracy; Capital and labor; etc. [152]
