Febiger, John Carson 1821-1898

Naval officer; born in Pittsburg, Pa., Feb. 14, 1821; was a grandson of Col. Christian Febiger, of the Revolutionary army; was appointed midshipman in the navy in 1838; was promoted to rear-admiral, Feb. 4, 1882; and was retired July 1 of the same year. During the Civil War he served on the Western Gulf blockading and North Atlantic squadrons; and after the war served on the Asiatic squadron and as commandant of the Washington navy-yard. He died in Londonderry, Md., Oct. 9, 1898.
