Hooper, William 1742-1790

Signer of the Declaration of Independence; born in Boston, June 17, 1742; graduated at Harvard in 1760; studied law under James Otis; and went to North Carolina in 1764, settling in Wilmington in 1767. He was a representative in the provincial legislature, and was a delegate to the first Continental Congress in 1774, in which he drew up an address to the inhabitants of Jamaica. Soon after signing the Declaration of Independence he resigned his seat and returned home, where he subsequently took part in local public affairs. He died in Hillsboro, N. C., in October, 1790.
