Peyton, John Lewis 1824-

Author; born in Staunton, Va., Sept. 15, 1824; graduated at the University of Virginia Law School in 1845; removed to Chicago, Ill., about 1855. He was made agent for the Southern Confederacy in Europe in 1861, and soon afterwards ran the blockade at Charleston, S. C. He remained abroad till 1880. He is the author of A statistical view of the State of Illinois; Pacific Railway communication and the trade of China; The American crisis; Over the Alleghanies and across the prairies; History of Augusta county, Va., etc.
