Tyler, Daniel 1799-1882

Military officer; born in Brooklyn, Conn., Jan. 7, 1799; graduated at West Point in 1819. In 1828-29 he visited France to study improvements in artillery; and in May, 1834, he resigned and practised civil engineering. At the breaking out of the Civil War he became colonel of the 1st Connecticut Volunteers, and soon afterwards brigadier-general of three months troops. Next in rank to General McDowell, he was second in command in the battle of Bull Run. In March, 1862, he was ordered to the West, and commanded a division of the Army of the Mississippi. Afterwards he was employed in guarding the Upper Potomac. When the Confederate army invaded Maryland, in 1863, he was in command at Harper's Ferry. General Tyler resigned April 6, 1864. He died in New York City, Nov. 30, 1882.
