Washington, John Marshall 1797-

Military officer; born in Virginia in October, 1797; graduated at the United States Military Academy in 1814; promoted first lieutenant of artillery in 1820; participated in the Seminole War in Florida in 1836-39, and was on duty near the frontier in the troubles with Canada in 1839-40. During the war with Mexico he won great distinction in the battle of Buena Vista, where he held the key of the American position, and repeatedly checked assaults by the enemy. He was promoted major a few days prior to the action of Buena Vista, for his services in which he was brevetted lieutenantcolonel. He was with his regiment, the 3d Artillery, on the San Francisco when that vessel was lost off the Capes of the Delaware on Dec. 24, 1853, when he, many officers, and 180 soldiers were drowned.
