[625] and twenty-five dollars to each volunteer who shall enlist and be credited to the quota of the town ‘under any future call of the President for men;’ also, the same amount to drafted men, and to citizens who put in representative recruits,—this to last until March 1, 1865.

Dudley furnished about two hundred men for the war, and at the end had a surplus of seventeen over and above all demands. Two were commissioned officers. The whole amount of money appropriated and expended by the town on account of the war, exclusive of State aid, was fourteen thousand four hundred and twenty-one dollars and four cents ($14,421.04).

The amount raised and expended by the town during the war for State aid to soldiers' families, and repaid by the Commonwealth, was as follows: In 1861, $55.44; in 1862, $1,645.51; in 1863, $2, 6686.86; in 1864, $2,826.49; in 1865, $1,650.00. Total amount, $8,864.30.

The selectmen in 1861 were William Kimball, John P. Sabin, Rodney Wallace, Caleb W. Jaquith, William O. Brown; in 1862, Caleb W. Jaquith, Cyrus Thurston, William H. Vose, George Robbins, Alfred R. Ordway; in 1863, William H. Vose, Caleb W. Jaquith, Cyrus Thurston, Alfred R. Ordway, John P. Sabin; in 1864, Caleb W. Jaquith, Cyrus Thurston, William Kimball, Rodney Wallace, Eugene T. Miles; in 1865, Caleb W. Jaquith, Eugene T. Miles, William Kimball, William O. Brown, John W. Kimball.

The town-clerk during these years was John T. Farwell. The town-treasurer, Ebenezer Torrey.

1861. A legal town-meeting was held April 7th, ‘to consider the propriety of appropriating money’ in anticipation of a call being made by the President for troops to sustain the Government, at which it was voted to appropriate ten thousand dollars; and Ebenezer Torrey, Moses Wood, C. Marshall, William Woodbury, Levi Doune, A. P. Kimball, and Timothy S. Wilson were chosen a committee to have charge of the expenditure
