Remarkable Surgical case.
--On the 4th of January,
Cornelius Toohey, in a fit of
mania a potu, made two incisions in his abdomen, and cut off, with his knife, two pieces, each about one foot in length, of the smaller intestine.
He was taken in charge by
Dr. J. McF.
Gaston, who was assisted by
Dr. W. C. Freeman.
The haggled ends were clipped off, so that near three feet of the intestine were taken out. The two ends were brought together, and sewed with silver wire.
The two incisions were opened into one by the surgeon, which, after the operation upon the intestine, was sewed up also, and the patient carried to the Poor-House.
Little or no hope was entertained of his recovery, but, to the astonishment of all cognizant with the case, he did survive, and on the 28th of February walked from the Poor-House to the South Carolina Railroad Depot, and went off a well man.--
