Official action of the British Consul.
The
Enquirer of Saturday states that the sovereignty of
Virginia has been acknowledged by the
British Government, through one of its officials.
The British brigantine
Lilly Dale, from
Halifax, N. S., entered Friday morning as the
Custom-House, the
Captain presenting the Consular certificate of the fact that he had deposited his papers with the words, ‘"
United States of America"’ erased.
In answer to a gentleman who expressed his gratification of his official action, the
Consul,
Mr. Moore, said he did what he considered his duty — that no
United States laws were in force here, and
that he believed his Government would coincide with him in this view.
