Affairs in Culpeper.
Mitchell's Station, Culpeper May 25.
As it is not yet time for the arrival of the train, I will while away the intervening moments by giving you a few items from Culpeper, that banner spot of the Old Dominion, which has won, as she has deserved, the sobriquet of ‘"Revolutionary County."’ She has not been behind her sisters throughout the State in making preparations, but, at the call of the Governor, immediately buckled on the armor of defence, and like Harry of Navarre, is now ‘ "ready, aye, ready"’ for the conflict.
The fires of Southern liberty are burning brightly upon her red hills, whilst her valleys and flat grounds send up the shout, resistance to the death!
Six military companies have been organized, and most of them are now in active service.
The ‘ "Culpeper Minute Men"’ are commanded by a gentleman formerly of Richmond, and a nephew of the immortal Captain of the Minute Men of the Revolution, concerning whom Mr. Randolph remarked in the United States Senate: ‘"They were summoned in a minute, marched in a minute, fought in a minute, and vanquished in a minute."’ This company was among the first to go to Harper's Ferry about six weeks ago, and are now there.
Company ‘"E, "’ Capt. Porter, numbers about 85 men, of the first respectability.
Capt. P.'s father, who resides about four miles from this place, has six sons in the Southern Army.
Company ‘"F"’ is commanded by Captain Taylor, one of our most opulent and influential citizens.
It numbers about sixty at this time, with recruits daily coming in. In his ranks are seven brothers by the name of Brown.--This beats anything I have heard of except an old lady in Nelson county, who, I understand, has nine sons in our our army.
The Letcher Guards, (an Artillery company,) among the first at the Ferry, and commanded by Capt. Freeman, has, I understand, been merged into a like company from Augusta, on account of not having the number required by law. --The Little Fork Cavalry is a superior company.
Our people are all ablaze at the startling intelligence from Alexandria.
Cedar Run.
