Interesting Pakagraphs from Northern papers.

--The Boston Post says:

‘ "The little real good to be obtained by successful war is a problem which much puzzles us. We want no subjugated States; we should not highly prize a conquered citizen."

’ The Bellows Falls (Vt.) Argus remarks that--

‘ "About all of the appropriations of thousands of dollars by towns for the war is for buncombe, show and effoct, in order that some one may ventilate their patriotism, and put an edge on some axe they may wish to have ground."

’ Says the New York Day Book:

‘ "A volununteer in one of the New York regiments now at the seat of war, who is a bit of a wag, came near being drummed out for anying, after they had been sworn in, 'Oyes, we have been cursed into the service.'"

Garrison is reported as saying in a late speech that, ‘"I am an old man, and in the nature of things must soon set out on my long journey."’ Guess he will find it pretty easy going, as it will be all the way down hill.

The New York Day Book intends no compliment to Old Abe when it says:

‘ "He is bringing destruction upon every safeguard of licerty, and upon the Government itself. If the doctrines and practices of the Republican party be allowed to prevail, every true Democrat, every human being in the North, who been white man's heart beating in his breast, better attempt to live under the government of Timbuctoo than to endure the insecurity of property and life, loss of liberty and free speech which these desperate fanation have inaugurated in the first three months of their rule."
