Ego and Echo.

A Prastaby.

‘ I asked of Echo, day,
(Whose words are few and often funny,)
What, to a novice, she could say
Of courtship, love and matrimony?
Quoth Echo, plainly;--‘"Matter-c'-Money."’

Whom should I marry?--should it be
A dashing damsel, gay and pert--
A of inconstantly--
Or selfish mercenary flirt?
Qaoth Echo sharply--‘"Nity Flirt!"’

What if — weary of the strife
That fang has lured the dear deceive--
She promise to amend her life,
And ef no more; can I believe her?
Quath Echo, with decision:--‘"Leave her."’

But if some maiden with a heart.
On me should venture to bestow it;
Pray should ac the wiser part
To take she treasure or forego it?
Quath Echo, very promptly.--‘"Go it!"

But what if seemingly afraid
To find her faith in Hymen's fatter,
She vows she means to disarmed--
In answer to my loving letter;
Quath Echo, rather coolly.--‘"Let her!"

What it, in spite of her disdain,
Oh God my heart Entwined about
With Guard's dear, delicious chain,
To closely that I can't get out!
Quath Eacho, long hingly:--‘"Get out!"

But if some maid with beauty blest.
As pure and fair as Heaven can make her,
Will state my labor and my rest.
Till envious death shall overtake her?
Quath Echo, soto roco.--‘"Take her."’
