The River.

--The water continued to rise throughout Sunday night, and the wharves and Dock street at Rocketts were inundated yesterday morning. The necessary precautions having been taken by persons who had lumber or other moveable property on the banks, but little if any damage was done by the flood. At Mayo's Island the water rose pretty high, and endangered the lumber at Gloson's saw mill, including a very large raft of logs, but everything was made secure. The flour mills and cotton factories have been compelled to suspend operations temporarily. --Yesterday the waters began to recede, and no further apprehension was felt. The view of the river from a point just above the Danville depot was really grand. The mighty volume of water surged and roared in a way altogether uncommon for the usually quiet James, and brought to our mind the big freshets that we used to have in old times, when bridges were swept away and fresh water mariners paddled about the lower streets in canoes.
