A move in the right direction.

--Governor Pettus, of Mississippi, has issued a proclamation, calling on the State and county officers to collect up all the arms, rifles and shot guns, new or old, in or out of order, and send them to Jackson, the capital of the State, where they may be repaired and hold in readiness for the use of the soldiers. He also notifies all citizens to arm themselves with double-barrel shot guns and hold themselves in readiness at an hour's notice. By these means the State will be in possession of a large quantity of good arms that might otherwise be useless. We hope the proper authorities will follow up the move of Governor Pettus.
