Thirteenth Regiment Virginia Volunteers.
To the Editors of the Dispatch: In your valued sheet, from time to time, there has appeared notices of various regiments, and the feats performed by those in actual service; but it has not been my fortune to observe any allusion to the Thirteenth Regiment of
Virginia.
While other regiments in
General Holmes' brigade have received credit for the extraordinary march to
Manassas.
I have seen no notice in that regard to this regiment, which was the one that accomplished the greatest march recorded by history.
On the evening of the 20th July orders were received for the 30th Regiment to move, and at 6 P. M. the march began.
On Sunday evening, 21st they were at
Manassas, though too late to participate in the memorable engagements of that day, having accomplished, with baggage, &c., the distance of forty-nine miles in less than twenty six hours actual time.
This regiment is composed of the flower of this section of
Virginia.
King George, Caroline and
Spotsylvania, are must nobly represented, and should the enemy attempt a landing near Marlboro's Point, they will be welcomed with ‘"bloody hards to hospitable graves" ’ by the 30th, who are now defending liberally their own firesides and household gods.
This regiments is ably officered.
Col. R. M. Cary, of your city, commands, and
Archer Harrison, of
Brandon, is the
Lieut.Colonel, and under their lead will give a noble account of itself.
The extraordinary good discipline of this regiments as due, in a great measure, to the commanders of the different companies.
Among these is one who received a military education at that noble school, the Virginia Military institute namely,
Captain V. M. Johnson, of the Mount Pleasant Rifles from
Spotsylvania Captain Johnson graduate with distinction some two years ago and is one of the most through and efficient officers of which the
Institute can boast; a fact of which one can become satisfied by witnessing the efficiency of the men under his command; and should the fortunes of war ever place the 30th in an engagement, the Mount Pleasant Rifles will give a most satisfactory account of themselves.
