Affairs on the Peninsula — Designs of the enemy.
The community was somewhat excited yesterday by a report, which seemed to be well authenticated, of an engagement near Newport News on the 18th inst., but later advices contradicted it entirely.
Nevertheless, the tenor of the official advices goes to show that sharp work may be apprehended in that quarter at no distant day. The presence of a large fleet of Federal vessels in
Hampton Roads is well known to
Gen. Magruder, who is preparing to give the enemy a warm reception should an attack be made.
We deem it unnecessary to notice any movements of troops, of which we received information yesterday.
The War Department received a dispatch last evening from
Gen. Magruder, stating that a portion of the command of
Brig. Gen. McLaws, of
Georgia, engaged the enemy yesterday forenoon, near
Young's Mills.
The dispatch gives no particulars.
