‘
A messenger from Hillboro' arrived, stating that a company of rebels, 300 strong, under command of
Capt. Holiday of
Nicholas county, were advancing upon
Hillsboro' for the purpose of burning the place and attacking
Flemingsburg.
Lieut. Sadler and
Sergeant Dudly were dispatched with 50 Home Guards to intercept them.
The enemy was found two miles beyond
Hillsboro', encamped in a barn.
Our men opened fire upon them, causing them to fly in all directions.
The engagement lasted about twenty minutes, in which the enemy lost 11 killed, 29 wounded, and 22 prisoners were captured, also 129
Enfield rifles, a large number of sabres, pistols,
Bowie-knives and cavalry accoutrements.
Our loss was three killed and two wounded.
