--The Boston
Transcript is a paper which circulates among the
bonton Yankees, and makes high pretensions to respectability, and yet, so debased is public sentiment at the
North, that the
Transcript is capable of publishing such a paragraph as the following!
Young Jeff. Davis.--A lady friend of ours, who was staying at the
West Point Hotel summer before when
Jeff. Davis and his family were visiting the same place, relates that one of the
Davis children, a boy of only four years, bearing the ignominious name of
Jeff. Davis, Jr., so outraged the decencies of hotel life by his profanity at the table, in the hall, and in the grounds, that a general feeling of horror at the little wretch's beastly conduct was the universal sentiment expressed by all the boarders, except the father and mother of the wicked young fury.
Meeting the lady, our informant, on the entry stairs one day, and recognizing her as a Northerner, among the delicate phrases, the dirty-faced little ruffian called her "a d — d black nigger," and threatened to throw a stone at her when he got a chance.
Sweet counsel and guidance that youth must have received at the parents likens.
