--Richard L. Bohannon
, the youth who was, on Monday, sent on to be examined before a called Court of Hustings, for purloining a case of instruments owned by Dr. E. L. Carter
, was brought before the Mayor
again yesterday, charged with stealing thirty dollars and fifty cents from Mr. Edward Norvell
The latter deposed that, about two weeks since, he went to the Spotswood Hotel
and called for some cigars.
In paying for them, he took out his purse and laid it down, his attention having been called off for a moment.
was standing by at the time.
On turning round, he missed both the prisoner and the money.
The former, he saw leaving the hotel, but at too great a rate of speed for him to overtake him. Feeling convinced that Bohannon
had appropriated the money, he waited quietly until the next morning, knowing that if such was the case, he would try to get off on the Danville
cars to visit a relative in the country.
made his appearance at the ticket office of the company the next morning, and he, being in readiness, seized him, and recovered a portion of his funds, which he readily identified.
Wishing to get the remainder, he threatened to carry the offender to the cage, whereupon he informed him that he had expended twenty dollars of the money with ‘"a Jew, named Levy
,"’ for a coat and shawl.
Going to the latter, he recovered his money and caused the party to surrender in exchange the coat and shawl.
He thus recovered all (for nearly all) of his money.
The witness stated that he wished it to be distinctly understood that he had preferred no charge against Bohannon
, out of respect to his relatives.
said he was aware of the fact, but that the witness was liable to a prose cution for not informing on the offender.
Information of the transaction had leaked out in the examination of the accused on the charge preferred by Dr. Carter
, which up to the present time was the only thing the officers knew of the happening of any such occurrence.
In reply to the suggestion that the defendant was half witted, the Mayor
said he had known him all his life, and those who indulged that idea labored under a decided mistake.
was committed to jail to be examined before a Court of Hustings, called to assemble on the 21 Monday in the present month.
