The Rappahannock lines.

battle near Orange Court-house — the enemy repulsed — capture of a large Number of officers and men.

A report reached the city yesterday of a heavy skirmish near Orange Court-House, on Saturday evening commencing at 4 o'clock, and lasting some two or three hours, between a portion of our forces and a body of the enemy, who had crossed the Rapidan from Culpeper county. The firing is said to have been very rapid, and was heard for a long distance on the line of the Central Railroad. No details of casualties on either side have yet reached as, beyond the fact that three hundred of the enemy were captured, including one of Pope's Brigadier Generals, by the name of Prince. There is a report that other commissioned officers were taken, but of this we have heard nothing definite. The enemy were driven back across the river — or, in other words, ‘"changed their base of operations"’ from Orange to Culpeper county.

Direct communication between Richmond and Gordonsville has been suspended for some days past, and it was impossible to learn anything of operations on the Rappahannock lines until yesterday. Of the general movements of the two armies nothing is now known with accuracy, except that the Yankees are becoming bolder daily, and continue their system of oppression and robbery with untiring perseverance. Events are rapidly tending towards a great battle in that direction, and the enemy is concentrating a heavy force to carry out the details of the new programme.
