Proceedings of the Courts.
The Mayor's Court--Recorder Caskie presiding. J. W. Banks was charged with stealing a
feather bed, a mattress, bedding, and bedstead, from
J. W. King.
The complainant stated that in July last be rented furnished rooms from the prisoner, at No. 91 Main street, which he occupied up to the present time, having paid his rent promptly, obtained receipts for the same, and as yet having received no legal notice to quit; that the prisoner seemed to have harbored a spite against him for some time past; once threatened to break his neck if he did not leave, and more recently entered his bed room, while his wife was sick, and, without ceremony, took out the bed and bedding, as charged, and placed them in another part of the house, out of his reach.
The
Recorder deeming it a case of trespass, instead of larceny, dismissed it referring the complainant to a civil tribunal for satisfaction.
John Womble charged with permitting Heisson to throw stones in the streets, was, after examination, dismissed, on condition that the erring juvenile should be parentally punished for his indiscretion.
Ben, a slave of
Richard Howe, was accused of stealing $19 from Henry, a fellow servant, with whom he lodged.
He admitted the larceny, but plead in justification that it was only a joke.
He was ordered 39 lashes.
Cornelius a slave, was charged with stealing a turkey at the second market, from
William Waddy, while the latter was busily engaged with a number of purchasers around his cart yesterday morning.
Cornelius insisted that he paid for the fowl, but his story was of such a confused tenor that his guilt would have been established upon its evidence alone.
He was ordered 39 lashes.
Henry Strauler was charged with renting a house to a slave without the permission of the slave's owner, and in direct violation of the laws
Strahler pleaded ignorance of the laws, and admitted the charge.
He was fined $10 and admonished that peace security and a still heavier fine would result upon a repetition of the offence.

J. Corbin, and
A. S. Hazel, were heard under a writ of
habeas corpus. The charge against them was illegally dealing in substitutes, the particulars of which have heretofore been reported.
The hearing resulted in their discharge from the civil jurisdiction, and they were handed over to
Gen. Winder as conscripts unless otherwise proven before that official.
