Averill's raid — attack at Dublin Depot.
A telegram was received at the War Department Tuesday evening, announcing that Averill
, with a very large force of mounted infantry, had the day before attacked the Confederates
under Gen. Jenkine
, at Dublin Depot, in Pulaski county
, and after a severe engagement forced them to fall back to this side of New river
On our side Gen. Jenkins
was wounded, Col. Hand
was killed, Maj. Tyler
wounded, and a number of other officers killed and wounded.
Among the wounded was Lieut Col. Thomas Smith
, a son of Gov. Smith
who fell shot through the thigh while gallantly leading his regiment — the 36th Virginia infantry.
He was left at the house of Mr. Guthrie
, three miles from Dublin
, and fell into the hands of the enemy.
All the Government stores
were brought off in safety.
