Personal.--
Colonel John S. Loomis,
Assistant Special Agent of the Treasury Department of
Richmond, is at the
Atlantic Hotel.
Presentation.--
Mr. J. G. Smith, Worshipful Master of
Lodge No. 1, F. A. M., in this city, was presented on Wednesday evening with a beautiful gold watch and chain, to which was attached a masonic emblem of the same substantial material.
The ceremony was most affecting, as it was sincere, the testimonial coming from those whose hearts fully appreciated the good work wrought by
Mr. Smith, who is proficient in whatever he undertakes, and never uses untempered mortar.
Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal.--All the water is out of this canal, and the repairs are being pushed forward with all possible speed.
If the weather continues favorable, the canal will be open for navigation about the 10th of January.
The Condition of
Edwards.--
J. H. Edwards, shot at Oxford Hall on Wednesday night while resisting the guard, is considered in a very critical condition by his attending physician.
Edwards was shot through the right breast, the ball passing through the lung and coming out under the shoulder blade.
He is also wounded in the throat by a bayonet thrust, and in the left wrist.
He made the most desperate resistance even after being so severely wounded.--
