WITH the return of summer the year of the truce expired, but hostilities were not resumed1 until after the Pythian games. During the armistice the Athenians removed2 the Delians from Delos; they considered them impure and unworthy of their sacred character by reason of a certain ancient offence. The island had been purified before, when they took up the coffins of the dead as I have already narrated3; but this purification, which seemed sufficient at the time, was now thought unsatisfactory because the inhabitants had been suffered to remain. Pharnaces gave to the Delians an asylum at Adramyttium in Asia, and whoever chose went and settled there.
