<l n="tr">Long hate to Turnus, as his foe profess'd,</l>
<l n="tr">Broke silence first, and to the godlike man,</l>
<l n="tr">With graceful action bowing, thus began:</l>
<l n="tr">“Auspicious prince, in arms a mighty name,</l>
<l n="tr">But yet whose actions far transcend your fame;</l>
<l n="tr">Would I your justice or your force express,</l>
<l n="tr">Thought can but equal; and all words are less.</l>
<l n="tr">Your answer we shall thankfully relate,</l>
<l n="tr">And favors granted to the Latian state.</l>
<l n="tr">If wish'd success our labor shall attend,</l>
<l n="tr">Think peace concluded, and the king your friend:</l>
<l n="tr">Let Turnus leave the realm to your command,</l>
<l n="tr">And seek alliance in some other land:</l>
<l n="tr">Build you the city which your fates assign;</l>
<l n="tr">We shall be proud in the great work to join.”</l>

<l n="tr">The rest impower'd, that soon a truce is made.</l>
<l n="tr">Twelve days the term allow'd: and, during those,</l>
<l n="tr">Latians and Trojans, now no longer foes,</l>
<l n="tr">Mix'd in the woods, for fun'ral piles prepare</l>
<l n="tr">To fell the timber, and forget the war.</l>
<l n="tr">Loud axes thro' the groaning groves resound;</l>
<l n="tr">Oak, mountain ash, and poplar spread the ground;</l>
<l n="tr">First fall from high; and some the trunks receive</l>
<l n="tr">In loaden wains; with wedges some they cleave.</l>
