<l n="tr">There lies an isle once call'd th' Ortygian land.</l>
<l n="tr">Alpheus, as old fame reports, has found</l>
<l n="tr">From <placeName key="tgn,1000074" authname="tgn,1000074">Greece</placeName> a secret passage under ground,</l>
<l n="tr">By love to beauteous Arethusa led;</l>
<l n="tr">And, mingling here, they roll in the same sacred bed.</l>
<l n="tr">As Helenus enjoin'd, we next adore</l>
<l n="tr">Diana's name, protectress of the shore.</l>
<l n="tr">With prosp'rous gales we pass the quiet sounds</l>
<l n="tr">Of still Elorus, and his fruitful bounds.</l>
<l n="tr">Then, doubling Cape Pachynus, we survey</l>
<l n="tr">The rocky shore extended to the sea.</l>
<l n="tr">The town of Camarine from far we see,</l>
<l n="tr">And fenny lake, undrain'd by fate's decree.</l>
<l n="tr">In sight of the Geloan fields we pass,</l>
<l n="tr">And the large walls, where mighty <placeName key="perseus,Gela" authname="perseus,Gela">Gela</placeName> was;</l>
<l n="tr">Then Agragas, with lofty summits crown'd,</l>

<l n="tr">And widely shun the Lilybaean strand,</l>
<l n="tr">Unsafe, for secret rocks and moving sand.</l>
<l n="tr">At length on shore the weary fleet arriv'd,</l>
<l n="tr">Which <placeName key="perseus,Drepana" authname="perseus,Drepana">Drepanum</placeName>'s unhappy port receiv'd.</l>
<l n="tr">Here, after endless labors, often toss'd</l>
<l n="tr">By raging storms, and driv'n on ev'ry coast,</l>
<l n="tr">My dear, dear father, spent with age, I lost:</l>
<l n="tr">Ease of my cares, and solace of my pain,</l>
<l n="tr">Sav'd thro' a thousand toils, but sav'd in vain</l>
<l n="tr">The prophet, who my future woes reveal'd,</l>
<l n="tr">Yet this, the greatest and the worst, conceal'd;</l>
<l n="tr">And dire Celaeno, whose foreboding skill</l>
<l n="tr">Denounc'd all else, was silent of the ill.</l>
<l n="tr">This my last labor was. Some friendly god</l>
<l n="tr">From thence convey'd us to your blest abode.</l>
