<p><lemma lang="greek" targOrder="U" from="ROOT" to="DITTO">γαῖαν</lemma>
with <lemma lang="greek" targOrder="U" from="ROOT" to="DITTO">προδεικνὺς</lemma> only: <emph>pointing</emph> to, i.e. feeling, <foreign lang="greek">ψηλαφῶν,</foreign> the ground <emph>before</emph> him: so of a boxer, <foreign lang="greek">χερσὶ προδεικνύς,</foreign> sparring, <bibl default="NO">Theocr. 22.102</bibl>. Cp. Lucian <title>Hercules</title> 1 <foreign lang="greek">τὸ τόξον ἐντεταμένον ἡ ἀριστερὰ προδείκνυσι,</foreign> i.e. holds in front of him: id. <title>Hermotimus</title> 68 <foreign lang="greek">θαλλῷ προδειχθέντι ἀκολουθεῖν, ὥσπερ τὰ πρόβατα.</foreign> Seneca <title>Oed.</title> 656 <foreign lang="la">repet incertus viae, | Baculo senili triste praetentans iter.</foreign> The order of words is against taking <lemma lang="greek" targOrder="U" from="ROOT" to="DITTO">ξένην</lemma> with <lemma lang="greek" targOrder="U" from="ROOT" to="DITTO">γαῖαν</lemma> （when we should write <foreign lang="greek">ἐπὶ</foreign>）,  and supplying <foreign lang="greek">τὴν ὁδόν</foreign> with <foreign lang="greek">προδεικνύς.</foreign>
